When The Fat Lady Sings

A ridge line view, Vermont

Another deer season has wrapped up. Five weeks of effort, of chasing deer across parts of northern New England. Many sights and sounds and experiences. The critters, the land they live on and the people I get to spend time with while doing this make it special. The stories that will be told over the coming months will help cement the relationships and events of the season...and will help to start me think of the season to come.

As with any passing, there is sadness, but as Seneca, the Stoic, stated,

"Every new beginning comes from some other beginning’s end."

So the next season, while in the distance, is out there. I'll start thinking about what I want next season; the who, what, where, how and why of my pursuit.

In the meantime, it feels like conservation week in my house. Phone calls, events, planning. That lady singing is a great back drop. Thinking about our woods and waters feels like a good thing to focus on- trying to give back to the natural world that has given me so much joy the past several months, years...really my whole life.

Backcountry Hunters and Anglers Pint Nights Dec 10th and 11th (more here). I'll be in Montpelier.

The VT Fish and Wildlife Conservation Group is cohosting a Green Fire Film Showing on Dec 14th- should be a nice event to think about the land ethic, through the lens of a hunter, part of our Modern Traditions slate of events.

If you are a hunter, I encourage you to think about how you can give back to this tradition that has given so much to you.

As Teddy Roosevelt said,

"Do what you can, with what you have, where you are."
