Getting Involved

In the last couple of years, I've become more engaged with organizations that work to protect the way of life I cherish. I believe that you should work to be the change you want to see in the world. Lofty goals...

But it has to start somewhere, so starting small has been what I've done. Send in membership money. Probably not enough, but out of seven organizations I belong to, I am really active in two. These two share some overlapping concerns, so that work in one can yield results for the other. The other groups get some money and easy effort from me- of course I'll electronically sign a petition.

For the two groups I'm active in, I give some time volunteering to do work. I write a little and coordinate a newsletter and emails, I draft comments to legislators, show up at meetings, volunteer at a fish hatchery. This is my way of giving back to a world that has given me so much. Do I believe in everything these groups do? No. Do I hope to alter this? Of course. This change needs to come from inside, after learning the ins and outs of the group. So I'll keep working, planting seeds of change, hoping that down the road the harvest will be bountiful in terms of fish, wildlife, and preserved landscapes.
